What originally motivated you to do this work, and what continues to motivate you?
As a nurse, I felt the gap in health care where comprehensive whole-person care was missing. I left nursing and pursued integrative training through transpersonal psychology and yoga therapy as a way to bridge that gap. I am motivated by witnessing students’ healing journeys; through empowerment, self-care and hope that is real and inspired by self-compassion.
What is your vision?
I am passionate about community service. My vision is to integrate yoga, yoga therapy and wellness practices into underserved communities, particularly those touched by cancer- survivors and caregivers. Therapeutic yoga is an essential component in an integrated health and wellness plan and should be accessible to all.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your therapeutic yoga work?
Connection to courageous, loving people and the reward of creating space for others to connect.
What are some of the things your students have taught you?
We are not defined by our struggles or illness. We can shine our hearts and gifts and live with cancer and use our stress to heal from the inside out. The depth of this holistic heart work is inspiring to see in my students.
In working with people recovering from cancer, what changes have you noticed in yourself, your thinking, or feelings about ‘cancer’?
I witness through the eyes of my students’ how resilient they are. They are much more than their diagnosis. They inspire me to live well, seek connection, and to pray and serve one another. I am humbled by the grit and hard work it takes to not just survive, but to thrive.
Stephanee Howell offers compassionate, therapeutic yoga classes, restorative yoga classes, workshops, private & group yoga therapy sessions with particular focus on cancer survivors & caregivers.
Inspired by yoga’s inherent wisdom & healing potential, she invites her students, beginners to experienced alike, to deepen their self-awareness through breathwork, meditation, & unique, expressive-art practices.
Stephanee encourages her yoga students to be inspired by their own open heart. Stephanee’s classes cultivate inner calm & intuitive awareness. Her history of nursing & current work as a hospice volunteer & lay pastoral counselor inform her Kripalu-based teaching style, creating a gentle & meditative experience. She helps students to develop integral qualities such as grace & mindfulness, guiding them into an enriching & nurturing yoga practice, fluid from mat to life.
Stephanee is a 200 hr Registered Yoga Teacher certified by the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, a 500 hr Registered Phoenix Rising Therapeutic Yoga Teacher, & a Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist (IAYT Certification in 2017). She is certified by the National Yoga Alliance with additional certified training in Y4C’s (Yoga for Cancer) specialized teaching methodology, training in the Mindful Yoga for Cancer Integrative/Research-Based Model, & certification in Restorative Yoga with Jillian Pransky, a Yoga Works instructor. Stephanee is a retired RN & holds a Master’s Degree in Transpersonal Psychology specializing in Creativity & Innovation.
